`Bluebell Wood’

  by Lisa Empson

I travelled several miles for the photographs which inspired this painting, only to find the following week that there were swathes of them virtually on my doorstep.
One of my early paintings there are things I like and don’t like about this final result. I remember feeling it was rather too `stylised’; that it should be more realistic. But I remember coming downstairs the morning after I had painted it and looking in amazement at the way the light bounced off the tree trunk centre picture. I remember calling out “Who did that?” I couldn’t believe I had painted it.
A leading solicitors in York was interested in using the image to brighten their office space. Their idea was to have individual trees set against the otherwise ugly pillars. Ultimately scanning and reproducing the image onto a relevant format would have made the venture would have been very costly.
