`Oystercatchers Carpe Momentum’
by Lisa Empson
There were many unexpected joys when I returned to my home town of Hartlepool. This was one of them. I took my camera onto the beach in front of my house on a beautiful sunny day. All of a sudden, with a `whoosh’, a huge flock of birds took flight into the sky. I snapped lots of photographs, and this painting was the result. It wasn’t until some weeks after I had it on exhibition that I was told these birds are oystercatchers.
The yellow splodge towards the bottom of the painting came from nowhere when I was painting it. I had no yellow on or near my brush. I liked its shape, and the mystery, so left it. An observant young visitor to the gallery loved it too, declaring it to be a “mermaid”! So there.
